This article provides information about the ancient history and civilization of the Samarkand oasis. The scientific views of ancient sources and historians on the origin and etymology of the word Samarkand are also comparatively analyzed. In addition, the ancient inhabitants of the Samarkand oasis and their significance in the formation of the ethnic culture of the oasis are revealed.
