This article mainly deals with the origin of the ethnonym Kyrgyz and its semantic content, which is one of the most complex and controversial issues in the history of ethnogenesis of the Turkic peoples. This topic is studied on the basis of ancient Chinese chronicles, Turkic inscriptions, Arab-Persian sources, and modern historical and linguistic research. Various theories have been put forward by scholars about the origin of the ethnonym Kyrgyz, and one of the most common views associates it with the number "forty". According to this interpretation, the Kyrgyz meant "forty clans" or "forty tribal union". The results of the study show that the ethnonym "Kyrgyz" is not only an ethnic name, but also an important historical concept expressing the processes of political, cultural and social unification of the ancient Turkic peoples.
