Annotatsiya

This study analyzed the practice of prescribing psychotropic drugs in several major American oncology centers. During the study period, a group of patients were hospitalized in oncology centers, and if we take them as a whole, i.e., 100%, then at least 51% were prescribed one psychotropic drug. The most frequently prescribed drugs were hypnotics, which accounted for 48% of the total prescriptions, followed by antipsychotics in 26%, and anti-anxiety drugs in 25%. Antidepressant drugs accounted for only 1% of psychotropic prescriptions. Analysis of the basics of prescriptions showed that 44% of psychotropic prescriptions were written for sleep, 25% were given for nausea and vomiting; about 17% were associated with depression, and 12% were associated with diagnostic medical procedures. The total prescription rate was approximately 2 psychotropic drugs per patient, only 2% of prescriptions were found to cause side effects.
