Annotatsiya

The article examines the evolution of portrait poetics in literature at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It analyzes the peculiarities of literary portraiture in the works of O. de Balzac, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde, as well as the transformation of portrait description within the context of modernist aesthetics. Particular attention is paid to the transition from realistic objectivity to subjective and symbolic representation of a literary character. The study explores the functions of psychological, social, and symbolic portraiture, as well as the role of detail, intertextuality, and authorial perception. The research reveals both universal tendencies in the development of portrait poetics and national specificities of Russian and foreign literature.
