This article analyzes the clinical and microbiological significance of biofilm-forming bacteria on cardiovascular prostheses, particularly artificial vascular grafts, endografts and other implantable biomaterials. Bacterial adhesion to the prosthetic surface, formation of an extracellular polymeric matrix and development of a chronic infectious focus are among the most serious complications in cardiovascular surgery. The study reviews the biofilm-forming properties of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Enterococcus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The article discusses the pathogenesis of biofilm, diagnostic approaches, treatment challenges and preventive strategies based on scientific literature. The results indicate that appropriate biomaterial selection, aseptic surgical technique, antibiotic prophylaxis, early microbiological diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are essential for preventing cardiovascular prosthetic infections.
