MINIMALLY INVASIVE ULTRASOUND-GUIDED SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS FOR PURULENT-INFLAMMATORY SOFT TISSUE DISEASES IN CHILDREN: A REVIEW OF CURRENT TECHNIQUES AND OUTCOMES

Purulent-inflammatory soft tissue diseases are common in pediatric surgery, and open incision is traumatic and leaves scars. Ultrasound guidance enabled a shift to minimally invasive methods, yet their pediatric adaptation remains poorly systematized. This review analyzes ultrasound-guided techniques in children, patient selection criteria, the learning curve, and clinical outcomes. Ultrasound differentiates infiltrative, abscess, and phlegmonous stages and enables real-time access planning. The main techniques are needle aspiration and percutaneous Seldinger catheter drainage, adapted to age and graded anesthesia. Success in pediatric series ranges 85–100% with few complications; conversion follows multiloculation, bleeding, or catheter malposition. The method shortens hospitalization, reduces trauma, and improves cosmesis, but is not universal. When selection criteria are met it is effective and safe; standardized pediatric protocols and multicenter studies are needed.
