This article examines the pragmatic functions of enantiosemic phraseological units (idioms and fixed expressions containing inherent semantic contradiction or auto-antonymy) in contemporary English literature and media discourse. Enantiosemia within phraseology represents a complex linguistic phenomenon where a single expression can convey diametrically opposed meanings depending on contextual parameters, speaker intent, and stylistic emphasis. Drawing upon corpus-based analysis and academic insights indexed in Scopus and Google Scholar, this study categorizes key pragmatic roles of these units, including irony, mitigation, rhetorical ambiguity, and stylistic polarization. Through specific textual examples from classic and modern English literature, the paper demonstrates how auto-antonymous idioms serve as subtle instruments of interpersonal communication and cognitive styling.
