This research explores the exegetical methodologies applied to anthropomorphic descriptions in the Quran, specifically focusing on the interpretations of the Salaf (early generations of Islam) as documented in Tafsir al-Tabari. The study addresses a highly pertinent issue in contemporary Islamic discourse: the persistent debates surrounding verses of mutashabih (ambiguous) nature, which often result in theological fragmentation. Many modern movements claim exclusive adherence to the "Salafist" path—those living within the first three centuries of the Hijri calendar. Utilizing a qualitative analytical approach, this study investigates the primary source, "Jami‘ al-bayan" (composed between 270–290 AH) by Imam Abu Jafar al-Tabari (d. 310 AH). The findings reveal a dualistic framework in the Salaf tradition: one segment of scholars preferred maintaining the literal wording while negating creature-like similarities (ithbat/tafwid), while another group employed ta’wil—a strategic linguistic shift of the text's apparent meaning to align with the divine context and linguistic metaphors.
