This article analyzes the role and source-study significance of written sources in researching the history of Timurid art. Since some architectural monuments of the Timurid period have not survived intact and certain works of visual art have been lost or preserved only fragmentarily, written sources are of special scholarly importance for reconstructing the artistic, architectural, and ceremonial environment of the age. The article examines court chronicles, biographical anthologies, memoirs, travel accounts, and historical works as sources for Timurid art, cultural life, patronage traditions, and circles of intellectuals and artists. In particular, it discusses the source value of the works of Nizam al-Din Shami, Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi, Alisher Navoi, Zahir al-Din Muhammad Babur, Dawlatshah Samarqandi, Zayn al-Din Wasifi, Ibn Arabshah, Ruy González de Clavijo, Fasih Ahmad Khwafi, and Abd al-Razzaq Samarqandi.
