Annotatsiya

The expansion of social media has transformed the linguistic practices of multilingual young people. Digital platforms provide users with opportunities to combine languages, dialects, scripts, emojis, images, and other semiotic resources within a single interaction. This study examines code-switching and translanguaging among young people on social media and identifies their principal linguistic, pragmatic, and sociocultural functions. The research employs a qualitative literature-review method and synthesizes relevant studies on multilingualism, computer-mediated communication, youth language, digital discourse, and identity construction. The findings indicate that young users switch between languages to express identity, establish group solidarity, communicate emotions, create humor, address different audiences, and compensate for lexical or expressive limitations. English frequently appears in multilingual online discourse because of its international status and strong association with digital culture, entertainment, education, and popular media. Nevertheless, social media communication cannot be understood only as an alternation between separate languages. Translanguaging provides a broader framework because young people draw flexibly on their entire linguistic and semiotic repertoires. Although these practices promote creativity, participation, and multilingual identity, they may also produce misunderstanding, linguistic exclusion, unequal language prestige, and concerns about the maintenance of local languages. The study concludes that code-switching and translanguaging are not signs of linguistic deficiency. They are strategic and socially meaningful practices that reflect the complex communicative demands of contemporary digital environments.
