SPEAKING NAMES IN A.P. CHEKHOV'S WORKS AND THEIR MEANINGS
Атаев, Улмасжон, Хомидова, Шохиста
Annotatsiya
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the study of naming systems in literary texts, particularly in the semantics and poetics of character surnames. In the early prose of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, “speaking surnames” function as an important artistic device that reveals the inner essence, social status, and psychological traits of characters. This study examines the zoological onomasticon, including surnames derived from animals, birds, and insects, as well as related nominative units. The findings demonstrate that such names create a comic effect, express the author’s attitude toward characters, and guide the reader’s perception.
