LEXICAL BUNDLES IN ACADEMIC DISCOURSE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH AND UZBEK LANGUAGES

Lexical bundles – statistically recurrent multi-word sequences – are fundamental to academic discourse. While their role in English academic writing is well documented, comparative English – Uzbek research remains scarce. Drawing on Hyland’s [6] functional taxonomy and corpus findings from Anwar et al [2] and Hyland and Jiang [7], this article examines the structural and functional characteristics of lexical bundles in both languages. English prose favours framing and text-organising bundles (in the case of, on the other hand), while Uzbek academic writing leans toward research-oriented and topic-referential bundles rooted in the formal publicistic register. Cross-linguistic differences in bundle structure reflect the typological contrast between the analytical English and the agglutinative Uzbek. The findings have implications for academic writing pedagogy and cross-linguistic discourse analysis.
