PILGRIMAGE ROUTES OF TURKESTAN HAJIS AND THE PROBLEMS (LATE 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURIES)

This article is devoted to pilgrimage routes from Turkestan to Mecca, the problems encountered on the route, and the policy of imperial government regarding the pilgrimage. Despite the fact that Turkestan was in colonial conditions, the number of pilgrims in the region increased sharply by the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Although the construction of the railway greatly increased the number of pilgrims, the pilgrimage was not ensured from various obstacles and difficulties. Besides, the article analyzes the issue based on various sources in detail that although the Russian Empire did not restrict the pilgrimage of Muslims, it tried to control it, considering pilgrimage a political threat.
