A COMPARATIVE SEMANTIC FIELD ANALYSIS OF “BENEFIT” ACROSS ENGLISH AND UZBEK CULTURES

The study explores the meaning of the concept benefit and its semantic field in English andUzbek linguistic cultures. The aim is to determine the formation, development, and usage of this concept in bothlanguages through a comparative analysis of dictionaries, language corpora, and proverbs, as well as to identifyits internal semantic structure. Using conceptual analysis, semantic field mapping, and comparative analysisbased on lexicographic data, the research reveals that the concept of benefit consists of three semantic layers:the core, near-periphery, and far-periphery.In English, benefit is predominantly interpreted in a utilitarian sense, reflecting the individualistic andpragmatic values of Anglo-Saxon culture. In Uzbek, the concept corresponding to benefit (foyda, manfaat, naf)encompasses a broader range of meanings associated with collective values, moral responsibility, reciprocity,and spiritual well-being. These features reflect the cultural traditions and socio-cultural norms of Uzbek society.The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of intercultural communication, translation studies, andforeign language teaching.
