This article discusses the issues of developing piano performance competencieson the basis of an interpretative approach. It analyzes the importance of interpretation in theformation of artistic thinking, musical hearing, technical skills and individual performance stylein future music teachers. Also, based on the experience of European piano performance, themethodology of working on a work, deep understanding of the musical text and creating an imageduring the performance process is considered. As a result of the research, effective pedagogicalapproaches and practical recommendations were developed to improve students’ performanceskills
