Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Ekbom's syndrome, is a common movement disorder with sensorimotor symptoms that occur during sleep and restful wakefulness. There are primary and secondary forms of RLS. The underlying cause of primary RLS is unknown, but genetic influences play an important role in the pathogenesis of RLS, especially when the disease begins at a young age. This review article discusses in detail the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, criteria for diagnosing RLS, and special attention is paid to the genetic aspects of this disease, since in our previous studies more than 40% of cases of RLS were found in families. Possible genes involved in the development of RLS are highlighted.
