FEATURES OF THE GUT MICROBIOME IN PATIENTS WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized not only by motor symptoms but also by pronounced non-motor manifestations, among which gastrointestinal dysfunction plays a significant role. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the role of the gut microbiome and the gut–brain axis in the pathogenesis and progression of Parkinson’s disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the gut microbiome in patients with Parkinson’s disease and to assess its relationship with clinical manifestations of the disease. The study included patients with Parkinson’s disease who underwent clinical evaluation of motor and non-motor symptoms using the UPDRS and Hoehn and Yahr scales, as well as analysis of the gut microbiome status with assessment of microbial load, structure of the microbiotic core, and signs of dysbiosis. The results demonstrated significant alterations in the gut microbiome composition, characterized by a reduction in obligate microbiota and an increase in opportunistic microorganisms, which were associated with disease duration and severity of clinical manifestations. These findings confirm the important role of the gut microbiome in mechanisms of neuroinflammation and progression of Parkinson’s disease and substantiate the need to consider it in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
