SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF “GENERATION” AS A SOCIO-CULTURAL PHENOMENON

The article presents various theoretical approaches to the study of the concept of “generation” at different stages of its research. The comparative historical method made it possible to find out how the concept developed, what content was invested in it at different stages of social development. The issues of generational change and conflict, within the generational and intergenerational transmission of statuses, values, experience attracted and attracts the attention of sociologists and other representatives of socio-humanitarian knowledge. The state of the social system is determined by the totality of losses and achievements of generations, the effectiveness of relay mechanisms from generation to generation of spiritual and material heritage. In the twentieth century. the problem of intergenerational relationships, continuity and conflicts in the interactions of “fathers” and “children” escalated due to the accelerated rhythm of transformations, diversification of the identity of subjects in a diverse world - generations began to act as stable structures connecting individuals with social communities, helping the subject to find himself in generational relevance. These trends can be traced from statistically significant differences in the values of representatives of ages (opinion polls show the generational structure, characteristics of generations, the relationship between them) and ending with discussions about what are the reasons for the misunderstanding of children and parents. The understanding of the generation as a multi-valued category requiring an interdisciplinary approach did not come immediately, and only the sociocultural approach allows us to consider the concept of generation in a broad sense. The author of the article on the basis of the theoretical analysis clarifies the definition of generation. This article presents a sociological analysis of the concept of generation from the point of view of various scientific approaches and the current state of the problem. The basic approaches to the analysis of generations in sociology and related sciences are considered. The importance of studying generations as special social groups is being updated. It should be noted that the term “generation” is used in various ways, has a systemic character, which can be analyzed in the study of intergenerational interactions.
