THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TERMINOLOGY AND ONTOLOGY

Аннотация
This article analyzes the theoretical and practical interrelations between terminology and ontology. Terminology, as a system of terms used within a specific field or discipline, deals with the naming, definition, and standardization of scientific concepts, whereas ontology represents their conceptual relations and hierarchical structures. In other words, through ontology, terms are not presented merely as a list, but are arranged within hierarchies, relations, and semantic links. Therefore, the integration of terminology and ontology is considered crucial in linguistic research, information technologies, the semantic web, and artificial intelligence systems. In short, terminology can be regarded as the “linguistic foundation,” while ontology serves as the “conceptual foundation.” As for the research methodology, comparative analysis and a review of scholarly literature were employed. The works of scholars such as Wüster, Cabré, Temmerman, Guarino, and Gruber, as well as practical models like WordNet and OntoLex-Lemon, were examined. The results show that terminology constitutes the linguistic basis of ontological systems and plays a decisive role in identifying conceptual relations, while ontology systematizes terms and reduces problems such as polysemy and synonymy. In conclusion, it can be stated that the integration of terminology and ontology provides a stable methodological basis in both theoretical and practical domains.
