This article examines the cultural and economic activities, as well as economic and ethno-cultural relations, that took place in settlements of the Southern Aral Sea region during the 5th–11th centuries AD. The study is based on materials from the Khorezm Archaeological Expedition and research conducted during the years of independence. Special attention is given to the dynamics of the Amu Darya River, the development and decline of irrigation systems, settlement patterns, agriculture, and handicraft production. Using historical-stage and comparative theoretical approaches, the study identifies three major phases of socio-economic development.
