Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the second most common and frequent indication for cardiac surgery valvular heart disease. Severe MR is characterized by a significant decrease in exercise tolerance and high mortality. The most common organic pathology of the mitral valve (MV) is degenerative disease. A detailed and systematic assessment of the MV apparatus and MR mechanisms is critical for the management of these patients, planning the type and timing of surgical intervention. Echocardiography plays a leading role among modern visualization methods in patients with pathology. When examining a patient with MR, it is necessary to determine the exact mechanism of regurgitation development, the degree of its severity and hemodynamic consequences.
