Results of clinical research on the use of plant biofilm in the therapy of prosthetic stomatitis

The purpose of the study was to assess the clinical effectiveness of plant biofilm in the therapy of prosthetic stomatitis in patients using removable plate dentures, in comparison with standard therapy using medicinal ointments. A prospective comparative clinical study was conducted with the participation of 40 patients with Newton grade I-II prosthetic stomatitis who regularly used removable plate dentures. Patients were randomized into two groups of 20 people. In the 1st (control) group, standard therapy with anti-inflammatory and/or antifungal ointments was used according to the generally accepted scheme. In the 2nd (main) group, plant biofilm was used, applied twice a day (morning and evening) after meals to the cleaned mucosa of the prosthetic bed and the inner surface of the denture. Assessment was carried out before treatment (day 0), after 1, 3, and 7 days according to the clinical index of prosthetic stomatitis (CIPS, 0-12 points: hyperemia, edema, pain/burning, subjective discomfort) and the visual analog scale for pain (VAS, 0-10 points). By the 3rd day of treatment, a more pronounced decrease in CIPS was recorded in the 2nd group (3.6±1.2 points versus 5.4±1.3 points in the control group; p<0.01) and pain intensity according to VAS. By the 7th day, complete or almost complete regression of clinical manifestations of prosthetic stomatitis was noted in 80% of patients in the main group and in 55% in the control group (p<0.05). Patients in the main group more often reported a rapid decrease in burning sensation and improved comfort when wearing dentures. The use of plant biofilm provides faster and more pronounced relief of clinical manifestations of prosthetic stomatitis compared to standard ointment therapy and can be considered as a promising component of complex treatment for this pathology
