Maxillofacial surgery: between therapeutic intervention and aesthetic alteration – an islamic ethical perspective

Abstract
The article examines maxillofacial surgery within the context of ethical and philosophical issues in Islamic bioethics, focusing on the boundary between medical necessity and cosmetic alteration of appearance. The analysis draws on the works of contemporary Islamic scholars, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi and Muhammad Ali al-Bar, as well as resolutions of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy. A comparison between Islamic and Western bioethical paradigms highlights areas of convergence and divergence. Through the discussion of specific clinical cases (congenital cleft lip, post-burn reconstruction, cosmetic rhinoplasty, and surgery for severe psychological distress), the study outlines criteria for permissible interventions within the Islamic legal and ethical framework. An integrative decision-making protocol for maxillofacial surgery in Muslim societies is proposed.
