Institutional constraints on women's economic activity in Uzbekistan: an empirical analysis of discriminatory social norms
Zebo Alikovna, Nurmonova
Abstract
This article provides an empirical analysis of discriminatory social norms affecting women’s economic activity in the context of Uzbekistan, examined through the institutional domains of the family, education, and the labor market. Based on sociological survey data, the study explores the extent to which informal social norms persist in society and identifies the mechanisms through which they shape women’s participation in economic activity. The findings demonstrate that these norms are embedded in and reproduced by key social institutions, exerting differentiated and institutionally structured constraints onwomen’s economic engagement.
