Modeling the deformation of a ferromagnetic shell in an alternating magnetic field

A coupled magneto-mechanical model to simulate the deformation of a ferromagnetic cylindrical shell under the action of an axial alternating magnetic field is presented. The model includes the anhysteretic Langevin magnetization curve, the quadratic magnetostrictive coupling, the penetration of the field across the wall thickness (skin effect), and the forced vibration of the shell in the radial “breathing” mode. The magnetostriction is proportional to the square of the magnetization, and it is demonstrated that the deformation is at twice the frequency of the applied field. Numerical simulations enabled the quantification of the effect of resonance, skin effect and field amplitude on the radial displacement.
