Abstract
Rail transport is an important mode of transportation, carrying a large number of passengers and cargo. However, rail transportation is also a significant consumer of energy, with a significant portion of that energy used to pull trains. Due to the rising cost of energy and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there is an urgent need to develop methods for optimizing train operating modes in order to save electricity. There are several ways to optimize train operation to save energy. These methods can be categorized into two main groups: 1) modeling-based methods, which use mathematical models to calculate the most efficient driving mode; and 2) methods based on real-world data, which rely on actual train traffic information to train machine-learning algorithms that can then be applied to optimize driving. For example, studies have shown that optimizing the driving mode can lead to energy savings of up to 30%.
