Purpose: the problem of damage to tank car boilers as a result of loss of stability requires new approaches to assess the possible causes of loss of stability. The task of assessing the impact of a combination of various factors (such as deviation of the boiler shape and excess of external pressure) on the possibility of loss of stability in operation is relevant. Method: boiler stability calculations were carried out, taking into account the actual thickness of the shell, determined based on the results of the technical condition assessment. Calculations were carried out under the action of the standard value of external pressure and at its excessive values. Results: calculations of boiler stability under the action of external overpressure with a standard value of 40 kPa showed that the loss of boiler stability (without deviation in shape, with local defects from welding) and at such a pressure value has not been established. Under the action of an excess external pressure of 40 kPa, a loss of stability is possible for a boiler without local defects from welding, but with a global deviation of the boiler shape with a relative out-of-roundness value of about 2.7%. Under the action of excess external pressure of ≥ 79 kPa, loss of stability is possible for the boiler without global deviation of the shape. Practical significance: possible causes of loss of stability of tank car boilers in operation were determined: global deviation of the boiler shape with a relative out-of-roundness of about 2.7%; action of excess value of external overpressure ≥ 79 kPa; combination of the presence of a global deviation of the boiler shape and the effect of an excess value of external overpressure (in case of violation of the unloading process technology).
