Land use in Uzbekistan, within the marginal environment of Central Asia, faces significant challenges due to its dry climate and conflicting demands between forestry and agriculture, including livestock management. Overuse and inappropriate management of natural resources, particularly soils, forests, rangelands, and water, have resulted in widespread degradation, accelerated by unsustainable irrigation practices that contributed to the drying of the Aral Sea. This article examines the need for integrated land use management systems (ILUMS) to address these challenges. It reviews existing land use practices in Uzbekistan, focusing on agriculture, livestock, and forestry, and highlights governance and institutional reforms required for sustainable development. The concept of comanagement, which involves shared decision-making between state and non-state actors, emerges as a promising governance model. Specific ILUM approaches like agroforestry and improved rangeland and water resource management are discussed as potential solutions for achieving sustainable land use in Uzbekistan.
