Diabetic nephropathy is kidney damage in diabetes mellitus, manifested by nodular and diffuse glomerulosclerosis and in the terminal stage, chronic renal failure [37]. Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most severe complications of diabetes mellitus, leading to disability and death due to end-stage renal failure [34, 35]. According to statistics, diabetic nephropathy occurs in 20.1% of people with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 6.3% of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus [31]. However, the main pathophysiological mechanisms of the development of diabetic nephropathy are the same in both types of diabetes and are not specific [37]. Moreover, diabetic nephropathy is in third place on the list of causes of death in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, after cancer and cardiovascular diseases [31]. In addition, in 50-75% of patients with diabetes mellitus, the cause of death is diabetic nephropathy [13, 33, 40]. The United States spends $1.9 billion annually on treating people with type 1 diabetes, while the cost for people with type 2 diabetes is $15 billion. According to statistics provided by the United States Kidney Donor Data System, almost 520,240 people required dialysis in 2010, half of whom had type 2 diabetes [37].
