The article highlights the role of vitamin B12 in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic polyneuropathy. The possible mechanisms for the development of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with DM are thoroughly discussed. The impact of cyanocobalamin on the course and prognosis of diabetic polyneuropathy is also considered. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between metformin use and the presence of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods research: We examined 23 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who were attending outpatient care at the clinic of the Republican Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Endocrinology (RSPMC of Endocrinology). Results: The data analysis showed a tendency towards lower vitamin B12 levels in individuals with reduced sensory function compared to those with preserved sensory function. The vitamin B12 level was lower (197.0±78.5 pg/mL). Conclusion. It is necessary to determine vitamin B12 levels in patients with clinical manifestations of diabetic polyneuropathy.
