Abstract
The article presents the results of research on the influence of winter wheat straw mulching and irrigation water mineralization on the microbiological activity and gas regime of saline soils under cotton cultivation. It was found that the application of mulch contributed to an increase in the number of the main physiological groups of microorganisms and enhanced the concentration of carbon dioxide in the soil air. A relationship between soil biological activity and cotton yield was identified. The most favorable conditions were observed at irrigation water mineralization levels of 3.5–4.0 g/L. The obtained results indicate the prospects of mulching application for improving the biological activity of saline soils and increasing the efficiency of cotton cultivation.
