A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS AS A SOCIOLINGUISTIC PHENOMENON IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK MEDIA DISCOURSE

The relationship between media language and phraseology has emerged as a key focus within contemporary linguistics, demonstrating how fixed expressions, idioms, and innovative phraseological forms shape public discourse. The present study examines the interaction between media discourse and phraseology with particular attention to English and Uzbek contexts. Drawing on recent research by Al-Subhi (2024), Nuriddinova and Mannonova (2025), and Oripova (2025), the analysis explores how media texts employ and transform phraseological units to achieve stylistic, pragmatic, and persuasive aims. In English-language media, phraseological patterns are instrumental in constructing evaluative stance and engaging readers (Bednarek, 2006; Al-Subhi, 2024). In contrast, Uzbek media exhibits creative adaptations of idiomatic expressions to comment on political and cultural issues (Nuriddinova & Mannonova, 2025; Oripova, 2025). The findings indicate that both linguistic traditions utilize phraseological play and transformation to attract audiences, convey ideological meanings, and express cultural identity. By comparing English and Uzbek media discourses, this study highlights the universal yet culturally specific function of phraseology in mass communication and outlines potential directions for future cross-linguistic research.
