Turan is the historical name for a geographical region in the center of the Eurasian continent. Its borders historically stretched from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Yettisuv and Pamir mountain ranges in the east, and from the southern Russian steppes and the Ural Mountains in the north to the Amu Darya River in the south, sometimes extending as far as the Hindu Kush and Kopet Dag mountains. During the Bronze Age, the southern part of Turan was inhabited by the people of the Oxus civilization, who practiced settled agriculture. In contrast, the central and northern parts were home to the populations of the Andronovo cultural-historical community, whose primary economic activity was nomadic pastoralism. This article analyzes the communication routes within the Turan region from a historiographical perspective, using data introduced to the field through archaeological research.
