This article discusses the importance of furan derivatives obtained from biomass feedstocks as alternative and environmentally friendly fuel additives. The methods for obtaining furfural and other furan derivatives from renewable lignocellulosic biomass sources, as well as their physicochemical properties, are analyzed. The high energy density of furan derivatives, their ability to improve the combustion process due to the oxygen atoms present in their structure, and their potential to reduce harmful emissions make them promising biofuel components. In particular, the effects of these compounds on octane number, cetane number, combustion efficiency, and environmental performance when added to petroleum fuels, especially gasoline and diesel fuel, are analyzed. The results indicate that biomass-based furan derivatives can serve as alternatives to conventional petroleum-based fuel additives and play an important role in the development of sustainable energy.
