Аннотация
Access to external capital remains uneven across early-stage technology ventures, leading many founders to rely on bootstrapping practices that substitute internal resourcefulness for formal financing. This study examines how founders of early-stage technology startups sequence bootstrapping strategies across the venture lifecycle and how these choices shape subsequent growth trajectories. Drawing on interviews with founders across a range of sectors alongside archival data on funding milestones, we categorize bootstrapping behaviors into customer-funded, relationship-based, and operational thrift strategies, and examine which combinations are associated with successful transitions to external financing. Findings suggest that customer-funded strategies, particularly pre-sales and staged service delivery, correlate with stronger subsequent investor interest because they generate verifiable demand signals rather than projections alone. Relationship-based strategies, including favor-based access to talent and infrastructure, proved valuable for extending operational runway but showed weaker association with fundraising outcomes. We argue that bootstrapping should be understood not merely as a response to capital scarcity but as a deliberate signaling mechanism that shapes how external investors perceive venture viability. These findings offer practical guidance for founders sequencing resource acquisition strategies under capital constraints.
