STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF MILITARY-TECHNICAL TERMS IN RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BASED ON L.L. NELYUBIN'S ILLUSTRATED MILITARY-TECHNICAL DICTIONARY

Military terminology is an important part of professional communication. It is used to describe military equipment, vehicles, weapons, and technical systems. This study analyses the structure of Russian and English tank and armoured vehicle terminology using L. L. Nelyubin’s “Illustrated military-technical dictionary”. The research aims to identify the main structural patterns of military terms and compare their use in both languages. The study used descriptive, comparative, and structural methods. The collected terms were divided into four groups: simple terms, derived terms, compound terms, and multi-component terms. The results show that multi-component terms are the most common type in the corpus. This is because modern tanks and armoured vehicles contain many complex systems and components that require precise names. The study also shows that Russian terminology often uses longer descriptive structures, while English terminology prefers shorter noun combinations. Despite these differences, both languages express military concepts clearly and accurately. The findings may be useful for military translation, terminology studies, and the teaching of specialized military vocabulary.
