Аннотация
This article presents a contrastive cognitive-pragmatic study of somatic phraseological units (idioms containing body parts) that express the emotion of anger in English and Uzbek. Applyin the conceptual metaphor and metonymy frameworks of cognitive linguistics, the research investigates how anger is mapped onto various somatic components (such as the head, blood, face, eyes, andliver/heart). The data comprises 250 idioms (125 in English and 125 in Uzbek) extracted from authoritative lexicographical resources and national corpora. The analysis reveals that both languages utilize the universal physiological metaphor 'ANGER IS HEAT/PRESSURE IN A CONTAINER' (e.g., English make one‟s blood boil, Uzbek qoni qaynamoq). However, significant differences appear in thespecific somatic domains targeted and the pragmatic contexts of their usage. English phraseology frequently targets the head, stomach, and teeth, emphasizing individualized physical reactions (e.g., bite one's head off, stomach an insult). Conversely, Uzbek somatic phraseology exhibits a unique cultural mapping of anger onto the liver (jigar) and eyes (ko„z), reflecting a holistic somatic-emotional connection (e.g., bag„ri qon bo„lmoq, ko„ziga qon to„lmoq). Syntactically, English somatic idios are predominantlyactive-transitive, whereas Uzbek somatic idioms utilize passive and stative compounding, reflecting distinct socio-pragmatic orientations toward negative emotional containment. These findings contribute to the fields of contrastive phraseology, intercultural pragmatics, and cognitive semantics.
