COMPARATIVE-TYPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF ADJECTIVE DEGREE CONSTRUCTIONS IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK LANGUAGES

This article discusses how English and Uzbek form comparative and superlative degrees of adjective. Despite sharing a universal cognitive drive to express scalar comparison, the two languages encode this meaning in structurally different ways. English alternates between inflectional suffixation (- er) and periphrastic constructions (more), conditioned by syllable count and frequency. Uzbek, as anagglutinative Turkic language, uses productive suffix -roq for all comparatives also, the preverbal adverb eng for superlatives, supplemented by a morphophonological reduplication construction for absolute meanings. The paper identifies key areas of convergence — including the three-term degree paradigm and the gradability constraint — and significant divergences in morphological strategy, word order, and definiteness marking.
