LINGUOCULTURAL REPRESENTATION OF GOOD AND EVIL IN THE KITE RUNNER

This article studies how the concepts of GOOD and EVIL are verbalised in Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner (2003). The novel is written in English but built on Afghan cultural material, so its moral vocabulary belongs to two linguistic worldviews at once. The analysis uses the linguocultural approach, the three-part model of the concept (notional, figurative and value components) and conceptual metaphor theory. Four levels are examined: the key English lexemes of moral evaluation (sin, theft, good, coward, honour); the Dari and Pashto culture-specific words kept untranslated in the English text (harami, nang, namoos, chapan, Inshallah, agha, kaka, bachem); the metaphors through which morality is conceptualised, above all moral debt, purity and the kite with its cut string; and the ethnic and religious axis along which evil is embodied in the Pashtun-supremacist figure of Assef. The study shows that good in the novel is verbalised mainly through the vocabulary of loyalty, sacrifice and return, while evil is verbalised through theft, cowardice and ethnic contempt, and that Baba’s formula reducing every sin to theft creates a moral-accounting metaphor which organises the whole plot. The three-word sentence “There is a way to be good again” is analysed as the value core of the text. The article closes with conclusions for English–Uzbek literary translation, in particular the treatment of non-equivalent culture-specific vocabulary.
