METAPHOR TRANSLATION IN J. D. SALINGER’S THE CATCHER IN THE RYE: ACOMPARATIVEANALYSIS OF ENGLISH AND UZBEK VERSIONS

Metaphorical expressions play an important role in literary texts because they enableauthorstocommunicate ideas, emotions, and perceptions through figurative images. When a literary work is translatedintoanother language, these expressions may undergo various changes as a result of dif erences in linguisticstructure,cultural associations, and stylistic conventions. This article examines the translation of metaphors inJ. D.Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye and its Uzbek versions. The study aims to identify howmetaphoricalmeanings are transferred from English into Uzbek and what types of transformations occur during the translationprocess. A comparative approach is applied to selected metaphorical expressions from the Englishoriginal andtheir Uzbek renderings. The analysis focuses on several aspects of metaphor translation, including preservationofthe original image, substitution with a target-language metaphor, literal rendering, modification, anddemetaphorization. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the metaphorical meaningof anexpression and its stylistic function in the novel. The study assumes that an adequate translationof aliterarymetaphor requires not only the transfer of its basic meaning but also consideration of its expressive andcontextualfunctions. The research is expected to demonstrate how translators negotiate between fidelity toSalinger’sfigurative language and the naturalness of Uzbek literary expression. The findings may contribute tocomparativeliterary studies and English-Uzbek translation research.
