Modern Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence: The Development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) Technologies

Аннотация
The article analyzes the stages in the development of natural language processing (NLP) technologies in relation to modern linguistic theory. The author distinguishes three stages—rule-based, statistical, and neural-transformer—and examines the role of linguistic knowledge at each stage and how that role has evolved. Particular attention is paid to the implementation of the distributional principle in vector models, the findings of probing studies on the grammatical knowledge of large language models, and the relationship between form and meaning. The article also discusses the linguistic challenges involved in adapting NLP technologies to morphologically rich and low-resource languages, including Uzbek, such as agglutinative morphology, tokenization, the coexistence of two writing systems, and the scarcity of corpora. The article concludes that the relationship between linguistics and artificial intelligence constitutes a two-way theoretical exchange rather than a one-way service relationship.
