COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTIONS OF PROVERBS ACROSS CONTEMPORARY TYPES OF DISCOURSE

This study investigates the functioning of English proverbs in contemporary types of discourse, focusing on their communicative and linguocultural characteristics across four discourse types: media discourse, educational discourse, advertising discourse, and everyday conversational discourse. The research is based on a corpus of twenty authentic examples collected from reliable English-language online sources, including news websites, educational platforms, marketing publications, and online discussion forums. A discourse-oriented qualitative approach was employed to examine the semantic, pragmatic, and rhetorical functions in different communicative contexts. The findings demonstrate that English proverbs remain productive linguistic units in digital communication despite the rapid evolution of online discourse. Their communicative functions vary according to discourse type: they serve informative and evaluative purposes in media discourse, instructional and motivational functions in educational discourse, persuasive functions in advertising discourse, and advisory, expressive, and interpersonal functions in everyday conversational discourse. The study concludes that proverbs continue to preserve their cultural significance while adapting successfully to the communicative practices of the digital age.
