Purpose: Evaluating the role of vascular endothelial cells in the development of exfoliative cheilitis. Methods: The research included 48 patients (comparison group) aged 16 to 65 years with a dry form of exfoliative cheilitis. The control group consisted of 20 healthy people. Results: Analysis of the results of the study showed a significant increase in vascular endothelial growth factor in the examined patients by an average of 57% when compared with the control group. Considering that VEGF is a stress-induced protein, its regulation is compared to other oxygen- and glucose-regulated proteins; therefore, an increase in its level can be considered an adaptive response to oxygen deficiency, which is associated with the activation of metabolic pathways regulated by proteins such as hypoxia-induced factor 1, which leads to an increase in the expression of pro-angiogenic factor VEGF and fibroblast growth factors. Conclusions. Thus, endothelial dysfunction plays one of the most important roles in the development of exfoliative cheilitis and, therefore, the search for methods for its correction will reduce the risk of vascular complications.
