Abstract
The paper presents the results of the test of fixation suppression of nystagmus in caloric tests. 56 persons suffering from chronic remitting labyrinthopathy, acute labyrinthopathy, vestibular neuronitis, otosclerosis, adhesive otitis media, vertebrobasilar insufficiency, chronic remitting vestibulopathy and neurinoma of the 8th nerve were examined. The bithermal BT test with involvement of electronystagmography was applied. The fixation suppression index (FSI) was calculated on the basis of comparison of nystagmus intensity (in units of slow component velocity) at the sites with gaze fixation and its exclusion. The most frequent response was complete suppression of caloric nystagmus in at least one of the BT trials (24 observations). This was independent of the level of vestibular analyser lesion. A significant (more than 0.50) IFP value of caloric nystagmus was rare (3 people). Introduction of the gaze fixation period when performing all 4 BT tests can serve as an additional technique in differential diagnostics of vestibular disorders. The results of the fixation test should be compared with the data obtained in other vestibulometric tests.
