The classification of acute pancreatitis remains one of the most controversial and challenging issues in emergency surgery. Despite the widespread recognition of the international classification of acute pancreatitis (Atlanta, 1992, 2012), its current version does not satisfy many practicing surgeons. Therefore, in 2014, the Russian Society of Surgeons proposed a new classification of acute pancreatitis. We have made an attempt to improve the existing classification in order to promote its broader use by practicing surgeons for the early diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis and its complications
