THE ROLE OF SIGN LANGUAGE IN DEVELOPING TEXT COMPREHENSION SKILLS AMONG DEAF CHILDREN

This article analyzes the impact of sign language on the development of text reading and comprehension skills in deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The purpose of the study is to identify the pedagogical potential of sign language, based on a bilingual approach, in shaping the logical and figurative thinking of deaf children, as well as in increasing the speed of decoding text content. The research methodology involved a correctional-pedagogical experiment and methods of comparative monitoring to determine the students' level of text comprehension. The results indicated that the systematic use of visual-spatial sign anchors in the educational process reduces the time required for deaf children to connect abstract words with graphic text by an average of 30% and significantly increases the depth of text comprehension. In conclusion, sign language serves as a fundamental "cognitive bridge" for deaf students to assimilate textual information, which justifies the necessity of widely implementing bilingual methods in the special education system.
