This article provides a definition of the term “bilingualism”, highlights the differences between natural and artificial bilingualism, special attention is paid to the conditions of formation, development and teaching educational bilingualism. The article also considers the issue of the linguistic personality of a bilingual and raises the problem of tolerant coexistence of two languages and cultures in certain social conditions and competent teaching and upbringing of a bilingual child in a bilingual community. The purpose of the article is to characterize the concept of bilingualism and its types, to identify the role of primary language and the didactic potential in teaching bilinguists foreign language. Results of the study: the types of bilingualism were identified, taking into account various criteria, the degree of influence of the type of bilingualism on the nature and causes of linguistic interference was determined. The basic principles of bilingual education are formulated. Determined the didactic potential of bilingualism in teaching a foreign language, the specificity of studying bilinguists foreign language.
