Аннотация
Let us dwell on one historical factor that makes a unique contribution to the illumination of the history of the ancient and early medieval city of Samarkand. This factor is the name of the city and the various interpretations associated with it. A lot of information about the ancient past of the city of Samarkand, which is one of the cities that has kept its name for almost three thousand years, has been preserved. In them, a number of scientists, who expressed dozens of views on the meaning of the word «Samarkand», include the information of written sources in different languages related to the toponymy of Samarkand from the ancient and early Middle Ages.
