Аннотация
Respecting a person’s choices about the mental health services they do or do not use is a hallmark of quality support and is often done for moral reasons, to enforce rights and to improve outcomes. However, providing information and support to people making decisions about mental health services can be a complex process and can be approached in many ways. Two main approaches to this end are “shared decision-making” and «supported decision-making». This article examines each of these approaches, discusses their similarities and differences, and considers how the two can complement each other. Exploring the contribution that each approach can make, we conclude by suggesting how future applications of these approaches can take into account the wider context of decisions, including continuous decision support; the number of services where decision-making takes place; and the variety of supportive practices needed to encourage active participation.
