THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND ETYMOLOGY OF THE NAME “TATAR”

The name “Tatar” has a long and complex history, appearing in various historical and linguistic sources over the centuries. This study examines its first mention in the Orkhon inscriptions and its later references in Chinese, Persian, and European sources. The research analyzes the associations of the name "Tatar" with different ethnic groups in the works of Rashid al-Din and other historians. Additionally, it explores the historical interactions between the Mongols and the Tatars, as well as the transformations of the name across different regions and periods. The final part of the study is dedicated to contemporary debates surrounding the name “Tatar”.
